NavigatorThis is about Sammy and the heart touching story that goes along with his life that proved without a doubt that he was man’s best friend.

Sammy went by many names, Dynamite, Dnyo, The Big Cheese, Navigator and of course just Sammy. The name Navigator came about because of the deeds he did while on this earth and like most dogs the love of riding in a car or truck or anything that would take them to new adventures. Sammy wanted to navigate back and forth to share his love as the story will reveal.

This part or heart touching act of Dynamite's life happened in the mid 90’s at which time I had five dogs total. Black Jack, Sassy, Annie May, Sammy, and Lug Nut. I know Lug Nut, that’s another story but this one reveals the love Sammy showed for man kind.

Sammy's travels all began on one of my many visits to a very good friend of mine, Max Wilson. Max was one of the greatest animal lovers I have ever met, you would almost think you were on Noah’s ark when you drove down his long dusty driveway surrounded on both sides with the view of all walks of animal life, horses, miniature ponies, goats, guineas, peacocks, chickens, birds and of course his dogs, who were a big part of his life, like all his animals.

When I would visit Max I would always take the crew with me and they always loved to visit Max’s house, better known as the farm. Max had several live in friends at various times and was always more than willing to help anyone who was down on their luck and at times would keep a lady friend around to keep him company. At this particular time Max had a lady friend staying with him, her name was Pat. Pat too was a great animal lover but leaned more toward dogs than the other creatures that were roaming around the farm. During her stay at Max’s she became ill and normally you would found her on the couch and unable to get up and about.

One day I visited Max and as usual loaded up the dogs and off to the farm we went. This visit would turn out to be a little different than most. After a short visit I loaded up all the dogs just like any other time but when I got home I discovered that Navigator was missing. I immediately called Max and he said, no fear, Sammy is here on the couch with Pat keeping her company and his presence was more than welcome.

To make this story short this is when Navigator started showing his compassion for mankind and in this case Pat was his patient and companion. He would stay a week, month or whatever until he decided to come home for a few days and then as usual would return to Pat's side on the couch. I guess this was his way of showing he cared and that he had not forgotten her.

Sammy's journey to the farm went on for a long time until one day he came home for the last time. When I discovered he was missing I assumed he had made his normal trip, but he was neither at home or at the farm. I searched the neighborhood over asking question after question, posting signs of his missing, but no word. The only hint I got was from a neighbor who lived about a quarter of a mile away and in the opposite direction of Sammy’s normal route to Max's house. I don't know if he went away to die or was on another mission to comfort someone.I miss you "Big Cheese". If there's a place in heaven for man's best friend I know you are there.

Since that time Max and Pat parted from each other and now have parted from this earth. It was a great lost to me and somewhat unique that God had called both of them home the same week in the spring of 2006. God loves us all and if you don't know Him please don't wait, for the time is now to let Jesus into your heart. God Loves All of Us. Thank you Father! Thank you for the love of friends of all walks of life

If you have a pet of any kind that is special please add your story to Simply Sammy, The Love of a Dog. Thanks, I hope to have someone add their story soon.

I always love stories about animals, in general, but of people & their pets. I've always had pets and right now I have my best bud R.B. (dog) and my cat Roxie. I'm sorry to hear that you lost poor Sammy. He sounds like he was a loving little guy. I hate it when an animal gets "lost" cause you always wonder what really happened to them. Did they maybe end up with someone to love them. Lets just say maybe Sammy came across someone who needed him more than you but he's happy. Anyways, thanks again for sharing.
